T-I copped a plea deal that will require him to serve only one year in jail on federal weapons charges stemming from an October bust in Atlanta. T-I was looking at a maximum of 30 years in prison on three of the gun counts he was facing. United States Attorney David E. Nahmias, who prosecuted the case, tells us, that T-I [given name Clifford Harris] won’t start serving his prison time for a year, and that he’ll remain “under strict bond conditions” during that time — including wearing a G-P-S monitoring system. “If he performs his community service as expected and lives up to the many other obligations of his bond and plea agreement, then he will still receive a substantial sentence for his crimes — a year in prison, three years of supervised release including a year of home detention, a total of 15-hundred hours of community service, and 100-thousand-dollar fine. If he does not fulfill his obligations, then he will remain bound by his guilty plea, but he will face a much longer prison sentence.”
During a press conference held outside the court the rapper said, “I realize completely that I have violated the law and I accept that I must be punished. I take it very seriously.” During his year of house arrest before his prison term, T-I will be allowed to leave the house for community service tours.
T-I was arrested during a federal sting in October in Atlanta. He was charged with possessing illegal weapons, including two silencers and three machine guns. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. — Elle Castro
